Edmond Halley (1656-1742)


English astronomer, mathematician and physicist.


Best known for calculating the orbit of the comet now known as ‘Halley’s Comet’, only visible from Earth every 75-76 years. Its appearance has been recorded since 240 BC, including an appearance in the Bayeux Tapestry in 1066. He also constructed a diving bell that allowed him to remain underwater for up to four hours and commanded a ship in the first scientific voyage by the Royal Navy.
